This portrait of Josephine Grey was painted by the fashionable artist George Richmond in London in the summer of 1851.   Josephine and her family were visiting the Great Exhibition from their home in Northumberland. While in London, she also had a tryst with her fiancé George Butler. They were married in January the following year and made their first home in Oxford.
